The baseball community is mourning the loss of Kevin O’Malley, a respected baseball executive, franchise owner, and former part-owner of the San Diego Padres, who died on June 30, 2026, at the age of 50. According to his family, O’Malley passed away from complications related to sepsis while receiving hospice care in Santa Barbara, California.
O’Malley was a member of one of baseball’s most influential families. He was the son of Peter O’Malley and the grandson of Walter O’Malley, whose leadership helped expand Major League Baseball to the West Coast. While carrying on the family legacy, Kevin established his own reputation as a dedicated executive and advocate for the sport.
Raised in Los Angeles, O’Malley developed a passion for baseball at an early age. He played the game during his years at Harvard-Westlake School and later at the University of Pennsylvania. After earning an MBA from the prestigious Wharton School in 2004, he combined his business expertise with his love for baseball.
In the late 1990s, O’Malley worked within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, gaining experience at both Great Falls, Montana, and Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. He later became co-founder and owner of Top of the Third Inc., which operated the Stockton Mudville Nine and the Visalia Rawhide, helping grow the game throughout Central California.
In 2012, O’Malley joined the ownership group of the Padres alongside the Seidler and O’Malley families. Though involved in professional baseball, he also built a successful career in finance, founding Carmelina Capital Partners in 2010 and serving as its managing partner.
Family remained at the center of O’Malley’s life. He is survived by his wife, Allison, their children Grace, Brendan, Brooke, and Margaret, as well as his father, siblings, nieces, and nephews. Remembered for his passion for baseball, business acumen, and devotion to family, Kevin O’Malley leaves behind a lasting legacy in the sport he loved.
